As super storm Sandy threatened Manhattan, the Park South Hotel not only stayed open as others closed, it gave shelter to 237 who’d have had nowhere to go during the storm—at reduced rates. Using generators, the staff boiled water for guests’ baths, prepared hot meals, and scoured the city for supplies. An extension cord from the front desk powered a table full of laptops where people could send emails and check flights. Besides providing free bottles of water, free food, and free wine, the Park South showed movies in its restaurant, Black Duck, to ease guests’ boredom. And the hotel reduced its rates by nearly 50 percent for the “inconvenience” brought on Hurricane Sandy.
